What is the FNAC test?

In FNAC, a very fine needle is passed into a lump — for example in the neck, breast or a lymph node — to draw out a few cells. The pathologist examines them under the microscope to tell whether the lump is due to infection, inflammation, a benign growth or something that needs further tests.

Why is it done?

  • A lump or swelling in the neck, breast, armpit or elsewhere
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Thyroid nodules
